💗 St. Patrick's Celebrations, Slimefest Weekend & Broadway Stories

Plus, spring cleaning made easy & the best cinnamon rolls in Westchester

Hello, Westchester!

This weekend lands in one of those funny little corners of the calendar.

Saturday is Pi Day (3.14), a holiday beloved by mathematicians and bakeries alike. While we don’t technically have a pie recommendation for you this week… we do have a baked good in our Eats-chester section that you’re going to want to know about.

And Sunday is the Ides of March, the date Julius Caesar famously ignored warnings about before heading off to the Senate. History suggests it may have been a good day for him to stay home. Fortunately for the rest of us, it’s shaping up to be a great weekend to get out and about!

Restaurant Week is still running across the Hudson Valley, St. Patrick’s celebrations are starting to roll through towns across the county (as one of us is Irish, you may notice the references ramping up as we get closer to the big day), and the calendar is filling up with good things… from Slimefest taking over Rye, a delicious murder mystery dinner, some great cheese by fantastic women, all sorts of live music across the region and plenty of other colorful weekend shenanigans along the way.

So, if you find yourself peeking out your window looking for something to do, we’ve got plenty for you below. If those windows are a little dirty from a rough winter, we’ve got something for that, too, from our partner Pink’s Window Service.

Let’s get into it!

Hard Not to Keep This One Secret…

We’ve been following a local chef who has been quietly building a following around his Canela Rolls, and after trying them, we can confirm they’re worth knowing about.

Chef Lalo Ortega, who began his career at Jean-Georges in Columbus Circle and later served as performance chef for NYCFC during their championship years, now bakes these rolls fresh each week out of New Rochelle. It’s the kind of discovery we love… serious culinary talent quietly making something joyful for the county.

They’re inspired by canela rolls from Mexican bakeries (a type of pan dulce), so they’re a little different from the classic American cinnamon roll, but in the best way possible. Chef Lalo uses fresh, organic ingredients and about half the sugar of many commercial versions, which makes them rich without tipping into that over-sweet territory. They’re honestly… just so good.

The flavor we tried was Mexican Chocolate, a favorite apparently and we could see why. Cinnamon tucked into every fold, a warm cocoa hint without chocolate taking over, and a glaze that softens beautifully when warmed. Ours were delivered fresh right to our door by Chef Lalo himself, which felt really special. Each roll is generously sized, so the trio lasted a couple of evenings… though that may depend entirely on your household’s level of self-control!

Flavors rotate with past options including Candied Pecan, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Matcha, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Orders are handled through Instagram DM, with pickup in downtown New Rochelle or delivery across lower Westchester (up to White Plains). Check out The Canela Rolls by Chef Lalo on Instagram (@TheCanelaRolls) and tell him we sent you. Let us know if there’s another flavor we should get when you do!
