š¢ Playland's New Scorpios Ride Opens Thursday

Hello, Westchester!
Weād like to start with a heartfelt thank you to those of you who continue to send along messages of how this newsletter helps you plan your week and those whoāve hit the contribution button to keep us fueled up on iced coffee over these past few weeks. Weāre keeping busy with things a bit further afield that we canāt wait to share and, trust us, the coffee is helping to keep us going!
Closer to home, we got word of an exciting new development at Playland Parkā¦ a new swing ship ride called Scorpios which will open this Thursday! The ride manufacturer Metallbau Emmeln described Scorpios as a classic āpirate shipā amusement ride with an open passenger space in the shape of a ship, providing a pendulum-style back-and-forth motion with room for 42 riders.
Combine the new ride with the existing classics, Friday night fireworks (9p start time) and perfect weather, and youāre moving into the weekend in style down at Playland.
One final thank you to everyone playing the weekly trivia questions. The number of entrants keeps rising so we hope youāre enjoying playing as much as we are researching it and putting it all together!

š Know Your County
With two questions last week (including Fridayās bonus photo question), weāve got a lot to catch up on!
Last Tuesday, we asked:
Hachaliah Bailey of Somers bought an exotic animal for $1,000 which was one of the first of its kind to arrive in America. What type of animal was it?
The answer wasā¦ Elephant!
The Indian elephant, named āOld Betā, quickly became a spectacle after it was purchased by Bailey and was brought on tour to crowds of paying customers. Old Bet was killed while on tour in Maine, after which Bailey built the Elephant Hotel in Somers in honor of Old Bet and two other elephants heād later purchased. Somers, due to the number of circus and menagerie proprietors from the area, became known as the ābirthplace of the American circus.ā Read more history on that here.

Unfortunately, you werenāt as lucky in last Fridayās photo trivia. Hereās the image again and weād asked in which town youād see it:
The answer was Mamaroneck, specifically at Walterās Hot Dogsā pagoda-style location on Palmer Avenue, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. Only 19% of you chose Mamaroneck, while 76% chose Sleepy Hollow, presumably due to the spooky nature of the lantern. Thanks to everyone who answered both! Letās keep going!
