💗 Loving Westchester's Weekend Spotlight: Ancient Aliens & Feeding Phil

Plus, we head south for a tee time in Yankee Stadium while the Rockettes turn 100

Happy Friday, Westchester!

Did we all make it through Tuesday’s Election Day off school and the Daylight Savings adjustment? And are we sure that was just the one hour that changed? We had quite a few “ok, let’s get these kids ready for bed” to find that it’s somehow still 5.30p. We’ve got another mid-week off day next Tuesday for Veterans Day but, for now, let’s focus on making the most out of this weekend.

The first week of November has Westchester in this funny seasonal power struggle between a Halloween that doesn’t want to give up and a Christmas come a bit early
and don’t get us started on Target, which should be rolling out Easter candy any week now. This weekend, you could catch one of Radio City’s first Christmas Spectacular shows of the season in the afternoon, get a family photo with Santa at The Westchester Mall in White Plains and then make your way up to Croton for arguably the biggest Halloween attraction the county has to offer in the still-running Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
 all in the same day.

For those of us who are happy with a holiday pause, there’s a ton of great events across the county appealing to all tastes
legendary musicians, top-notch comedy, an inaugural book festival, Major League Table Tennis (which we totally knew existed before this week) and the Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, which will literally appeal to all tastes. So get out there and enjoy it, we hope to run into you along the way!

🍔 Eats-chester

Freddy’s of Pleasantville has been on our list for a while, and it just so happened when we finally got there, it was in time to explore their Hudson Valley Restaurant Week brunch menu.

As we’ve been watching the restaurant establish itself and build a community, while being open about the highs and lows of restaurant life, it’s impossible not to root for them even if you haven’t stepped foot in the door. When you do, it’s the kind of vibe that feels elevated enough like you’ve actually gone ‘out out’ but in a way that’s comfortable like you’re not far from ‘in in’.

By the end of the meal our son Kai said, ‘Are you going to review this for Loving Westchester? Because if you do, you could probably let them know I didn’t think there would be anything here for me, and it turns out I loved all of it!’ By all of it he meant the three different appetizers, mains and desserts we all shared as part of the special $29.95 menu (which you can still catch until Sunday!).

To start we got the breakfast corn dogs, arancini and French toast sticks. My only complaint here
there wasn’t enough of it. The names don’t do any of them justice, the corn dogs were beautiful pork sausages in cornbread casing. Not corn batter, corn bread. Key difference. The sticks were eggy, fluffy, and syrupy and the arancini were perfectly balanced, sitting in what can only be described as a cacio e pepe nectar of the Gods.

We all thought the dry-aged Tavern burger would be the star (and in all fairness it was unanimously agreed to be one fine burger), but we would certainly return for any of those starters. We also got the b.e.c. risotto which was cheesy, rich and utterly indulgent, and followed it all up with their caramel brownie, carrot cake and icebox jar. No notes.

Freddy’s menu reads fancy, and its decor is bistro-esque, but its food just smacks of an inventive and thoughtful, awesome family meal. When you learn their motto is ‘Food is family’, it’s pretty easy to see what Chef Matthew Safarowic is aiming for in this exciting Pleasantville restaurant.
