šŸŽƒ Did Your Neighborhood Make Westchester’s Best for Trick-or-Treating?

Plus, a Chazz Palminteri Halloween party in Bedford, Vic DiBitetto hits Peekskill on Halloween night, and a Scarsdale Colonial with room to expand under $1.35m

Happy Friday, Westchester!

When you’re growing up, you’d look at a big day on the calendar and then immediately jump ahead to which day of the week it lands on next year. Thursday birthday spent in school? That’s ok, that means it’ll be on Friday next year and maybe you go home early. Sunday birthday? Disaster… a Monday birthday next year.

When you’re a bit older, you realize it’s not as straightforward. A Saturday Halloween is a kid’s dream… endless trick-or-treating starting in the warmer midday hours and whole families able to stroll around together with parents drinking from their Yeti or Stanley full of ā€œteaā€. Well, make the most of it because a Saturday Halloween won’t roll around until 2037 because of leap years!

Looking to make more of the day and maybe explore some new areas for Saturday’s festivities? Westchester realtor Francie Malina put together a list of top Halloween neighborhoods across the county.

Where are you planning to explore and what’s your ā€œteaā€ of choice?

Stay safe and Happy Halloween!

šŸŽƒ When the Veil Grows Thin

Hey, it’s Bec! Some of you might remember me talking about the origins of Halloween last year. For those who are new here, I’m Irish, Wes is American, our son Kai was born on the Isle of Man, and our daughter Beckett was born here in the States. A little family with roots in a few different places!

Halloween has always felt special to me, ever since I was a child. We celebrated it in a big way growing up, and that love has found its way quite naturally into our kids. But for me, there’s always been something deeper, something that stretches back through generations.

Halloween has its roots in Samhain (pronounced Sow-in), an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. It was a time to gather what the land had given, prepare for the darker months ahead, and acknowledge the belief that the veil between our world and the spirit world grew thin, allowing our ancestors and those we’d lost to feel a little closer.

Long before pumpkins, people carved turnips into lanterns to ward off wandering spirits. On the Isle of Man, where we lived when Kai was born, we saw that tradition still alive through the island’s own celebration, Hop tu Naa. I loved that something so ancient was also a part of everyday family life there.

We’ve just had the Hunter’s Moon, traditionally associated with preparing for winter. For me, this time of year is about remembering where we came from and letting go of things that no longer serve us.

Less about being frightened of what we cannot see, and more about feeling connected to what we cannot always explain.

Beyond all the wonderful ways to celebrate Halloween around Westchester, perhaps there’s also room for a quiet moment of your own. To remember someone, reconnect with your roots, or decide what you are no longer carrying with you as we head into another season.

Whatever you believe, we hope you find a little magic in it.

šŸ” Where the Heart Is

Incredible homes are listed in Westchester every week. Here’s one that caught our eye

The Key Details: 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, 1,808 square feet on 0.54 acres ($741 / square foot)

What We Love About It: A 1949 Colonial that lives like a new build. A second story added in 2017 nearly doubled the living space, and the update also brought a new roof and refreshed mechanicals. Local architect Howard Cohen’s design includes blown-in insulation, copper and cast iron plumbing, and low-VOC paints. A first-floor guest suite rounds out the four bedrooms, and a walk-up attic adds storage. The real bonus is the level, fenced yard, with room to expand the house or build out a backyard retreat.
