šŸŽ Apple Picking Season Opens at Outhouse Orchards Sunday

Ron Howard visits Jacob Burns for two Q&A screenings, Collective Soul plays The Cap Friday & a Katonah home under $1M on two wooded acres

Hello, Westchester!

We’ve travelled around a lot this summer and can’t wait to tell you about it in more detail. One thing we’ve learned, though, is that we’re a family of treasure hunters. Some of our best times have been trawling a beach for a shell, digging through antique barns for a passed over relic, or driving backroads to find a little known brewery or coffee shop. It all comes down to unearthing something that might not be too obvious to those who aren’t looking closely enough.

There’s a bit of that in a Westchester August. Families are away on vacation… or they’re here and just at a beach or club all day. And that’s great, and definitely needed, but in doing so, maybe expecting that things are quiet all month and missing an absolute gem…

Like Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard joining Jacob Burns Film Center for a retrospective series of his work, including Q&As and screening introductions. Or Connor McGinn following up his hugely popular overstock & 2nds sale with an online version for Michelin-quality ceramic sets. Or some 90s nostalgia with Collective Soul playing at The Cap.

Summer’s seashells keep washing up. Just grab them before the autumn tide comes in.

šŸ“ Know Your County

How have you been doing with these Westchester-based trivia questions? Too easy? Too hard?

Last Tuesday, we asked:

Which Mariah Carey music video featured the Dragon Coaster and Playland Park?

The answer is… Fantasy!

The music video for the 1995 #1 single featured plenty of boardwalk rollerblading, a ride on the Dragon Coaster, and a dance party in the parking lot. It was also Mariah Carey’s directorial debut. But 65% of you already knew that and chose correctly. Nicely done! Here’s a ride down memory lane…

Now let’s try this one out…

According to the US Department of Agriculture…

Which of the following crops covers the highest number of acres in Westchester County each year?

Good luck!

šŸ” Where the Heart Is

Incredible homes are listed in Westchester every week. Here’s one that caught our eye

The Key Details: 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 3,984 square feet on 1.83 acres ($250 / square foot)

What We Love About It: Under $1M in Katonah on just under two wooded, private acres is a combination worth paying attention to. The remodeled kitchen opens straight into a soaring, wood-burning-fireplace family room, and there's a finished walk-out lower level adding another ~1,000 square feet for a rec room and private office. All four bedrooms sit together upstairs, including a primary suite with its own dressing area, and the details show real craftsmanship: a 50-year architectural roof, Andersen windows, seven skylights, and 18 solid wood doors throughout. Tucked into a quiet cul-de-sac, yet still an easy trip to Katonah village, the train, and shopping.
