🍽️ A Michelin Bib Gourmand Pick Joins Hudson Valley Restaurant Week
Plus, the Westchester Book Festival returns, Paul Anka & Dweezil Zappa take the stage, and a Scarsdale listing under $1.1m
Hello, Westchester!
October flew by! Temperatures are expected to hit 70 degrees a few times this week, mentally keeping us in harvest festival and apple picking mode while everything else around us will be trying to fast-forward right to Christmas. We’ve seen the Macy’s ad with Melissa Joan Hart for a few weeks now, stressing about the right gifts for loved ones… this before we’d even picked up bags of Halloween candy.
On that note, hope everyone’s Halloween was a fun and safe one. It wasn’t without its hiccups for us… HalloweenCostumes.com threw us a fun curveball when we opened their package to get ready with the kids only to find one of the costumes completely missing. Fortunately, Bec is the family’s driving force behind costumes and decorations so we had some last-minute fallback options. It was a fun night but we must have missed the early Saturday wave as our kids wanted to keep going as the streets were emptying out around 8p.
With candy hangovers and Daylight Savings-encouraged earlier bedtimes, maybe you’re welcoming a quieter start to November. But as always, Westchester is giving you plenty of reasons to get out there and explore with arguably the biggest one being Hudson Valley Restaurant Week running now through November 16th. Swap those fun-sized bars with prix-fixe menus and put the mini New Year’s resolution on hold at least for this week.
We’ve been lucky enough to try some of the Westchester restaurants participating, namely Goosefeather, Brothers Fish & Chips, and Dubrovnik, and we’re eyeing up a few more to cross off the list in the next two weeks. Are there any you’re looking forward to trying?
Give us some recommendations and see you out there!
📍 Know Your County… with The Capitol Theatre!
Last week we asked… a well-known author with Westchester ties played a big part in the New York Knickerbockers’ name. Who was it?
The answer is… Washington Irving!
In 1809, long before The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Rip Van Winkle, Irving pulled off a massive publicity stunt. He placed classified ads in local papers searching for a missing Dutch historian named Diedrich Knickerbocker... a man Irving made up. Once the public was hooked on the search, Irving published A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty under the Diedrich Knickerbocker pseudonym, a satirical look at New York’s early Dutch roots written from the perspective of the made-up historian. The Knickerbocker name became synonymous with native New Yorkers and when the Basketball Association of America charter member New York team was being named, Knickerbocker was drawn from a hat. And there you have your New York Knicks!
Well done to the 61% of you who had Irving pegged correctly. That’s a wrap on the October contest! We’ll reach out to the winner this week with next steps on claiming those free tickets to The Capitol Theatre!
The Cap is also offering two free tickets to the winner of the November contest, which starts… right… now…
It’s officially Hudson Valley Restaurant Week across the region!
From now through November 16, dozens of culinary hotspots across Westchester and surrounding counties are dropping special prix-fixe menus. Over the years, our local food scene has exploded, earning tons of love from Michelin Guide inspectors. In fact, a few of our local favorites have achieved Michelin’s coveted "Bib Gourmand" designation, an award given to top-tier restaurants that offer great food at an excellent value.
Out of these four Restaurant Week participants, which Westchester staple has been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand? |
Good luck and Bon Appetit!
