Fall didn’t waste any time showing up! This week brought a very noticeable 10-degree drop in temperature compared to last week with more weekend rain coming thanks to a nor’easter working its way up the coast as we speak.
 
New England is meant to get the worst of it but, as of now, Westchester will still see rain and wind on Saturday and Sunday with potential coastal flooding and power outages. Keep an eye out on AccuWeather for evolving details… the best non-paywalled summary we could find!
 
The timing of the storm is unfortunate because the local events calendar was incredible this weekend and we’re already seeing a handful of postponements and cancellations coming in. So much so that we’ve removed all of the early cancellations we know about and have added a lot more things to enjoy indoors, so hopefully you’ve got some fallback options for the weekend!
 
Early postponements and cancellations include: Yonkers’ McLean Ave. Fall Festival, Irvington’s Rocktoberfest, Mamaroneck’s Paws in the Park Dog Walk & Festival, Sleepy Hollow’s Oktoberfest and Street Fair and Greenwich’s Hawk Watch Fest. A few indoor events we’re excited about include Puppy Pals in Peekskill (we saw it last year and it was a lot of fun), real-life ghost stories in Tarrytown (The Ark has a huge spooky season calendar starting up), and a handful of comedy shows to laugh off three consecutive rainy weekends!

📍 Around Our County

 
There's something special about an old theater.
 
With streaming at our fingertips and the way movies are released changing so much over the years, we find ourselves turning to the cinema for those special occasions again. A long-awaited kids' movie, an old classic on the big screen, or simply an excuse to spend a couple of hours somewhere other than the couch.
 
Admittedly, we’re partial to theaters that serve you at your seat (even better if it’s a special, movie-themed menu!), but there’s something wonderful about stepping inside a historic theater, knowing that generations of people have sat in those seats, waiting for the lights to go down.
 
We recently shared news of The Capitol Theatre’s 100th anniversary earlier this year. Imagine the history, the music, the legendary performances and the unforgettable nights that live within those walls!
 
And The Cap isn't the only Westchester institution with more than a century of memories to its name.
 
In Pelham, The Picture House has been welcoming moviegoers since 1921, when it first opened its doors with a silent film. More than 100 years later, it remains a beloved local cinema, showing everything from new releases and independent films to old favorites.
 
Then, there's Tarrytown Music Hall, which opened in 1885, making it Westchester's oldest theater. Over its remarkable history, the Music Hall has hosted far more than concerts and plays. There have been flower shows, basketball games and even roller-skating tournaments. Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson appeared there, too! The Cap has had its own transformations, evolving from a grand theater into one of the region's most celebrated live music venues, while The Picture House continues to find new ways to bring people together around the magic of film.
 
These buildings have changed with the times, but perhaps the most remarkable thing is that they're still here at all. Both The Picture House and Tarrytown Music Hall were once at risk of disappearing. The Picture House faced demolition to make way for a bank, while the Music Hall was nearly replaced by a parking lot. In both cases, local communities stepped in to save them.
 
We love that. These places aren't just buildings, they're where generations of Westchester families have gone for first dates, nights out, favorite films and unforgettable performances. And thanks to the people who cared enough to preserve them, there are still memories to be made.
 
With fall settling in, we're entering one of our favorite times of year for a trip to the movies. We're already looking forward to seeing Hocus Pocus at The Ark because some movies simply deserve to be watched on the big screen, preferably with a little popcorn and a room full of people who know every line.
